A banda italiana Lectern surgiu há quase duas décadas fazendo um Death Metal calcado em seus primórdios, sem nenhuma melodia apenas peso e brutalidade. Após muitas batalhas, trocas de integrantes chegam agora em “Deheament for Betrayal”, terceiro trabalho completo em estúdio mostrando que a fidelidade ao estilo é a chave principal do grupo. Conversamos com Fabio Bava (vocal/baixo) que nos contou tudo sobre passa, presente e futuro. (English Below)

Fabio Bava: Eu vivi o boom do Death Metal no início dos anos 90 e, depois de ter sofrido ouvindo bandas impossíveis de se tocar, então resolvemos formar o Lectern. O Death Metal estava com tudo na Flórida, o Death Metal ainda é dos Estados Unidos é o estilo americano. Tudo sobre o estilo old school vem desse país, nós tentamos seguir na mesma linha contínua. Death metal não é apenas o Cannibal Corpse, mesmo que pareça ser assim, raramente temos bandas que são realmente interessantes, eu acho.
Metal Na Lata: As músicas do novo álbum literalmente jorram brutalidade, não a espaço para descanso. Como vocês trabalham as composições?
Fabio Bava: Pietro (Guitarrista) geralmente escreve riffs e toda a composição está em suas mãos, e também desta vez foi dessa forma. Durante os ensaios, organizamos tudo em uma solução final, tanto para os solos, baixo, letras e bateria. Talvez no estúdio nós adicionemos alguns elementos para enriquecer todo o som, se necessário, e também outros elementos como introduções, efeitos sonoros e assim por diante.
Fabio Bava: Minha! Eu falei com Pietro há mais de dois anos sobre isso, então desenvolvemos o conceito muitas vezes naquele que todos podem ver na capa. O esboço mudou inúmeras vezes, nós chamamos muitos artistas para fazer isso, talvez dessa vez tenha sido mais complicado! É cheio de detalhes estranhos, se você olhar de perto há muitos detalhes também em segundo plano! Andreas Marschall fez um excelente trabalho.
Metal Na Lata: A banda já está na estrada para divulgação do novo álbum. Como vem sendo a repercussão nos shows? Existem planos de passar pela América do Sul?
Fabio Bava: Temos tantos planos em nossas cabeças que não podemos excluir a ideia de seguir em algum momento, em turnê pela América do Sul! Espero que alguém administre isso e propusemos algo a um amigo que mora no Peru. Nós tivemos uma turnê europeia este ano durante o último verão, entre junho e julho e todos ficaram muito satisfeitos com a grande vibração! Estamos nos concentrando para nossos próximos shows agora.
Metal Na Lata: O Lectern prática um Death Metal voltado para as raízes do gênero. Como você vê toda essa “mutação” que o estilo sofreu ao passar dos anos?
Fabio Bava: Se mudou, bem, não é mais death metal, pelo menos para mim! O Lectern precisa apenas de maldade para ser death metal! Riffs devem ser indiferentes! Se você mudar, não poderá reconhecê-lo como death metal. Eu nunca estive de acordo, por que as pessoas parecem se irritar ao ouvir o death metal com tantas mudanças de andamento através de novos elementos! Os enxertos são tão necessários? Quem sentiu a necessidade de mudar, mudou, quem não precisou, não mudou.
Metal Na Lata: Vocês são de Roma uma cidade extremamente cristã. Tocar Death Metal e profanar o satanismo, é uma forma de rebeldia, de ir contra as regras que a maior parte das pessoas estão aprisionadas?
Fabio Bava: Não! Eu apenas agi como eu mesmo! Eu vivo contra tudo que é conformista, o cristianismo é apenas uma das razões de como eu estou chateado! Religião é tolice, uma perda de tempo, uma chuva de ideias para as grandes massas! Eu odeio isso como todos os clérigos! Nossas músicas também são contra todos os padres pedófilos! Matem todos!
Metal Na Lata: O Lectern passou por algumas mudanças de formações durante todos esses anos, mas mesmo assim, a essência brutal da sua música nunca foi quebrada. Como vocês enxergam isso?
Fabio Bava: A mutação talvez ainda não tenha terminado, mas não estou falando de uma mudança! Para ser brutal tem muitos lados, temos que desenvolver e buscar soluções estranhas a qualquer momento, você sabe! O próximo passo será mais brutalidade! Nós não temos tempo para o almoço de Natal da família e diversos, você sabe.
Fabio Bava: Alinhar mudanças, instabilidade e desinteresse! Esta é apenas uma pequena lista de toda a merda que aconteceu nos últimos anos! Esta banda é um dever, se você tiver tempo para piadas, dê o fora daqui! Simples assim!!!
Metal Na Lata: Bem, são 3 álbuns de estúdio, 3 Eps, 19 anos de trabalho. Quais são os próximos passos? Existem planos para um disco ao vivo?
Fabio Bava: Em 2019, vamos lançar nosso novo álbum, provavelmente teremos outra turnê. Então tudo sobre merchandising e promoção serão divulgados em breve! Vai ser um perigo! Níveis de blasfêmia nunca antes tocados.

The band Lectern appeared almost two decades ago making a Death Metal based on its beginnings, without any melody only with weight and brutality. After many battles, member exchanges now arrive in “Deheament for Betrayal,” the third complete studio work showing that fidelity to style is the group’s key. We talked with Fabio Bava (bassist and vocalist) who told us everything about pass, present and future.
Metal Na Lata: Firstly, thanks for the interview and congratulations for the new album. I would like to know how Lectern started and which bands inspired you to form the group?
Fabio Bava: I lived the death metal boom in the early 90’s and, after having suffered impossible bands to play and to stay in, so Lectern came out. Death metal was Florida, death metal is still United States and the American style. Everything about old school death metal comes from this country, we try to be the continuous line. Death metal is not only Cannibal Corpse even if it seems to be so, seldom bands are more than interesting I think.
Metal Na Lata: The songs on the new album literally, exhales brutality, no space for rest. How do you work the compositions?
Fabio Bava: Pietro (Guitar) usually writes riffs and the whole composition is in his hands, and also this time it has been this way. During rehearsals, we arrange everything in one final solution, as for the solos, bass, lyrics and the drums. Maybe in studio we add some elements to enrich the whole sound if it is needed, and also other elements like intros, sound effects and so on.
Metal Na Lata: In “Deheadment For Betrayal”, we have a cover full of details, which translates very well the album title. Whose idea was it for the artwork?
Fabio Bava: Mine! I spoke with Pietro more than two years ago about that, then we developed the concept many times in what everyone can see on the coverart. The sketch changed countless times, we called up many artists to do that, it has been very troubled this time than ever! It’s full of weird details if you look closely to your sight, there are many details also in the background! Andreas Marschall did an excellent work.
Metal Na Lata: The band is already on the road to release the new album. How has repercussion been in the shows? Are there plans to go through South America?
Fabio Bava: We have so many plans in our heads that we cannot exclude to come one day touring in South America! I hope someone will manage it, and we propose something to a friend who lives in Peru. We had an European tour this year during last summer, between June and July and everyone were satisfied a lot about the great vibe! We are focusing to our next shows now.
Metal Na Lata: Lectern practices a death metal aimed at the roots of the genre. How do you see all this “mutation” that style has undergone over the years?
Fabio Bava: If it has changed, well, it is not death metal anymore at least for myself! Lectern needs badly to be just death metal! Riffs must be boor! If you change it, you cannot recognize it as death metal. I will never stood why people have to upset death metal with stupid changes through new inputs by force! Are grafts so necessary? Those who had to change, changed, who did not have to, did not.
Metal Na Lata: You are from Rome, an extremely Christian city. Playing death metal and desecrating with Satanism, is it a form of rebellion, going against the rules that most people are imprisoned in?
Fabio Bava: No! I believe and act as myself! I live against everything is conformist, Christianity is only one reason of how I am pissed off! Religion is foolish, a waste of time, a brainstorm for the fucking masses! I hate it with all the clergymen! Our songs are also against all the fucking pedophile priests! Kill them all!!!
Metal Na Lata: Lectern has undergone some formative changes over the years, but even so, the brutal essence of your music has never been broken. How do you see that?
Fabio Bava: The mutation is maybe not over yet, but I am not talking about a change! To be brutal has many sides, we have to develope and to look up for awkward solutions anytime, you know! Next step is going to be more brutal! We have no time for fucking family Christmas’ lunch and miscellaneous, ya know.
Metal Na Lata: From the foundation to the release of “Fratricidal Concelebration”, the band’s first full-length album, it’s been 16 years of difference. Why this long period until your first full length?
Fabio Bava: Line up changes, instability and disinterestedness! This is only a short list of all the shit happened in the last years! This band is a duty, if you have time for jokes, get the fuck out from here!
Metal Na Lata: Well, it’s 3 studio albums, 3 Eps, 19 years of work. What are the next steps? Are there plans for a live album?
Fabio Bava: In 2019 we will release our new album, we will probably have another tour. Then all about merchandise and promotion will see the light as always! It’s gonna be an hazard! Levels of blasphemy never touched before.
