Entrevista com Timo Kontio e Mathias Lillmåns (…and Oceans)
Com o lançamento do novo trabalho, “The Regeneration Itinerary”, e seguindo uma crescente de ótimos trabalhos, o …and Oceans está pronto para marcar a música com sua nova oferta que agradará os fãs e até conquistar alguns novos com sua mistura de Black Metal Sinfônico e música experimental/eletrônica, elementos que, por incrível que pareça, encaixam de forma única (veja nossa resenha do novo disco aqui). O Metal Na Lata teve a oportunidade de conversar com o guitarrista Timo Kontio e o vocalista Mathias Lillmåns sobre o novo álbum, a inspiração vinda do livro “O Alquimista”, suas influências e muito mais. Metal Na Lata: Gostaria de começar agradecendo o seu tempo e atenção à entrevista.
Timo Kontio: De nada! Obrigado pela entrevista!
Metal Na Lata: Como a banda tem visto a recepção do público às novas músicas e quais são as expectativas para o lançamento do novo álbum?
Timo Kontio: Bem, muito bem. Claro que “Inertiae” causou surpresa (risos). Quem curte …and Oceans sabe que isso é bem típico da gente, espere o inesperado. É claro que com o novo álbum esperamos abrir novas portas e curtir a jornada, como acontece com todo álbum novo. Vamos ver até onde isso nos levará desta vez.
Metal Na Lata: Este novo trabalho soa como uma continuação direta de “As in Gardens, So in Tombs” (2023), mas expandindo alguns aspectos, como o uso de teclados e partes eletrônicas. Esse era o objetivo da banda desde o início ou aconteceu naturalmente?
Timo Kontio: Bem, estávamos discutindo tentar algo diferente e ver se funcionava. Pelo menos tentei fazer algo fora do comum. O resultado são riffs um pouco diferentes, com elementos de thrash, palm mute, etc. Claro, é natural, no entanto. Não queremos forçar nada. Estamos abertos a todos os tipos de ideias e as experimentamos. Se elas não se encaixam bem no material do álbum, nós as descartamos.
Metal Na Lata: “As in Gardens, So in Tombs” foi bem recebido e criou grandes expectativas para o próximo álbum. Vocês sentiram alguma pressão para compor este novo trabalho ou a banda não sente esse peso depois de tanto tempo na indústria?
Timo Kontio: Claro, quando você começa a fazer algo novo, isso sempre está em sua mente, se você pode criar algo que valha a pena ouvir ou não (risos). Às vezes, pode levar algum tempo para chegar a algo decente. Às vezes, coisas ótimas simplesmente jorram. O fato é que já fazemos isso há tanto tempo e já lançamos vários álbuns, então somos bastante críticos em relação ao material que fazemos e, muitas vezes, isso se torna ainda mais crítico para o próximo. Embora já tenhamos feito isso tantas vezes, estamos bastante confiantes de que conseguiremos novamente quando começarmos a juntar as peças. Riffs, teclados, baixo, vocais e bateria… peça por peça.
Metal Na Lata: As letras de “The Regeneration Itinerary” abordam temas profundos como a existência, o universo e a vida, inspiradas na grandiosa obra “O Alquimista”, do escritor Paulo Coelho. Como funciona o processo criativo de uma obra com uma base tão complexa?
Mathias Lillmåns: Nunca fui um escritor que simplesmente pegasse a caneta e o papel e começasse a escrever. Preciso estar no estado de espírito certo. Algumas das letras são escritas no meio da noite, quando acordo de repente com uma linha presa na cabeça. Um bom exemplo disso é “Inertiae”. Também escrevo muito quando viajo; trens são perfeitos para escrever, especialmente se estou em um momento mental bastante sombrio. Este álbum é quase como um diário onde reflito sobre temas de crises existenciais e a jornada rumo ao despertar espiritual. Você pode ler nas entrelinhas o estado de espírito em que estive enquanto escrevia.
Metal Na Lata: Ainda sobre o tema escolhido, como a banda decidiu usar a obra como referência?
Mathias Lillmåns: Eu não escolhi escrever nada conectado a “O Alquimista”, do Paulo Coelho; ele me escolheu. Hehe. Li esse livro muitas vezes na minha vida e ele esteve lá para mim quando estive em momentos difíceis. Em algum momento após a conclusão deste álbum, comecei a traçar paralelos entre o livro e o que eu vinha escrevendo e descobri que os personagens principais estão passando por processos semelhantes em suas vidas. Ambos têm a opção de seguir seu verdadeiro significado ou dar meia-volta e escolher o caminho seguro e familiar, ficando presos em algum limbo pessoal. Eles seguem o caminho do mercúrio ou o caminho do cobre, da escuridão ou da luz.
Metal Na Lata: Hoje em dia, muitas bandas lançam apenas singles e não se preocupam com álbuns completos. Para vocês, qual a importância de lançar um álbum com músicas que tenham conexão e tragam sensações diferentes ao ouvinte, como “The Regeneration Itinerary”?
Timo Kontio: Para mim, pessoalmente, e provavelmente para toda a banda, o álbum inteiro é o que importa. Na verdade, essa opção de lançamento de single nunca foi cogitada. Claro que faria sentido lançar um single uma vez por mês, mais ou menos, e manter o “hype” nas redes sociais e plataformas de streaming, mas para mim o pacote completo é o que importa. O produto físico, a arte que o acompanha, as letras, etc. Além disso, lançar um álbum é, de certa forma, um desafio para a banda. Construir um conjunto de músicas que funcionem como um álbum. Isso nem sempre é fácil de fazer. Há vários álbuns de artistas de renome mundial que podem ter uma ou duas boas músicas e o resto são mais ou menos preenchimentos.
Mathias Lillmåns: Exatamente. Quase sempre escrevi álbuns conceituais na minha vida e provavelmente sempre escreverei. Tais formatos jamais seriam possíveis de serem lançados como um novo single aqui e ali, sem que seus ouvintes perdessem o fio da meada ao longo dos lançamentos. Não me importaria de lançar EPs de vez em quando, com umas quatro músicas que abordassem temas líricos menores do que os últimos três álbuns do …and Oceans.
Metal Na Lata: Mesmo com a modernidade e os elementos eletrônicos, como podemos ver em “Inertiae”, o novo álbum tem muito da vibe Black/Death Metal dos anos 90 em termos de som, estilo e brutalidade, como em “Förnyelse i Tre Akter”. Quão importante é para vocês se manterem fieis às suas raízes? Essa cena e esse momento ainda influenciam, seja na hora de compor ou tocar?
Timo Kontio: Para mim, o som dos anos 90 ou o sentimento daquela época é sempre algo que procuro em minhas composições. O sentimento especial que vocês tiveram quando descobriram todas aquelas novas bandas de black metal, e havia muitas delas. Claro que isso não é apenas uma questão de nostalgia, então com certeza fazemos isso com um toque moderno, mas sem esquecer de onde começamos. Então, para responder à sua pergunta, é muito importante nos mantermos fieis às nossas raízes. Esse é o som básico desta banda. Essas bandas dos anos 90 ainda são aquelas às quais eu retorno com frequência. Eu também gosto de algumas músicas novas e provavelmente elas são tão boas quanto as bandas do passado, mas essas bandas do passado levam você a um certo lugar e estado de espírito que nenhuma música ou banda nova consegue.
Metal Na Lata: Com o lançamento do novo álbum, quais são os planos da banda para o futuro?
Timo Kontio: Queremos levar isso para o próximo nível. Mais shows, mais festivais, mais turnês e mais lugares para visitar. Melhores condições são sempre um ponto positivo. Estamos realmente confiantes no que estamos fazendo, só precisamos estar no lugar certo na hora certa.

With the release of their new album, “The Regeneration Itinerary”, and following a series of great works, …and Oceans is ready to make a mark on music with their new offering that will please fans and even win over some new ones with their mix of Symphonic Black Metal and experimental/electronic music, elements that, oddly enough, fit together in a unique way (see our section on the new album here). Metal Na Lata had the opportunity to talk to guitarist Timo Kontio and vocalist Mathias Lillmåns about the new album, the inspiration coming from the book “The Alchemist”, their influences and much more. Check out the full interview below.
Metal Na Lata: I would like to start by thanking you for your time and attention to the interview.
Timo Kontio: You’re welcome! Thank you for this interview!
Metal Na Lata: How has the band seen the public’s reception of the new songs and what are the expectations for the release of the new album?
Timo Kontio: Well really good. Of course Inertiae raised some eyebrows, haha. People who are into …And Oceans know that this is quite typical for us, expect the unexpected. Of course with the new album we expect to open some new doors and enjoy the ride as with every new album. We will see how far it will take us this time.
Metal Na Lata: This new work sounds like a direct continuation of “As in Gardens, So in Tombs”, but expanding on some aspects such as the use of keyboards and electronic parts. Was this the band’s goal from the beginning or did it happen naturally?
Timo Kontio: Well, we were discussing trying something different and seeing if it works. At least I tried to do something out of the box. The result is a bit different riffs with thrash elements and palm muting etc. Sure it is natural nevertheless. We don’t want to force anything. We are open to all kinds of ideas and we try them out. If they don’t fit into the album material in a good way, we drop them.
Metal Na Lata: “As in Gardens, So in Tombs” was well received and created great expectations for the next album. Did you feel any pressure to compose this new work or does the band not feel that weight after so much time in the business?
Timo Kontio: Of course, it is always on your mind when you start to make the new stuff, whether you can create something worth listening to or not, haha. Sometimes it can take some time to come up with anything decent. Sometimes great stuff just pours out. The thing is that we have done it for so long and quite a few albums so we are quite critical about the stuff we make and often that gets even more critical for the next. Though we have done this so much so we are quite confident that we will manage again when we start putting the pieces together. Riffs, keyboards, bass, vocals and drums… piece by piece.
Metal Na Lata: The lyrics on “The Regeneration Itinerary” address deep themes such as existence, the universe and life, inspired by the great work The Alchemist, by the writer Paulo Coelho. How does the creative process of a work with such a complex basis work?
Mathias Lillmåns: I have never been a writer that can just put pen to paper and start writing. I need to be in the right state of mind. Some of the lyrics are written in the middle of the night when I suddenly wake up with a line stuck in my head. A good example here is “Inertiae”. I also write a lot when I travel, trains are perfect for writing, especially if I’m in quite a dark place mentally. This album is almost like a journal where I ponder themes of existential crises and the journey towards spiritual awakening you can read between the lines in what state of mind I’ve been in when writing.
Metal Na Lata: Still on the chosen theme, how did the band decide to use the work as a reference?
Mathias Lillmåns: I did not choose to write anything connected to Paulo Coelho’s “The Alchemist”, it chose me. Heh. I have read that book many times in my life and it has been there for me when I’ve been in dark places. At some point after this album was finished I started drawing parallels between the book and what I had been writing and found out that the main characters are going through similar processes in their life. They both have the option to follow their true meaning or turn around and choose the safe familiar path and be stuck in some personal limbo. They way of mercury or the way of copper, dark or light.
Metal Na Lata: Nowadays, many bands only release singles and don’t worry about full albums. For you, how important is it to release an album with songs that have a connection and bring different sensations to the listener like “The Regeneration Itinerary”?
Timo Kontio: For me personally and most likely for the whole band, the whole album is the thing. In fact this single release option hasn’t even come up ever. Sure it would make sense to release a single once a month or so and keep ‘the hype’ in social media and streaming platforms, but for me the whole package is the thing. The physical product, the artwork that comes with it, lyrics etc. Also releasing an album is somehow a challenge for the band. To build up a bunch of songs that work as an album. That is not always that easy to do. There are a bunch of albums from world class acts that may have one or two good songs on an album and the rest are more or less fillers.
Mathias Lillmåns: Exactly. I have almost always written concept albums in my life and probably always will. Such formats would never be possible to do as a new single here and there, without having your listeners losing the red thread throughout the releases. Would not mind releasing EPs tho every now and then, with like 4 songs that tackle smaller lyrical subjects than the last three …and Oceans albums.
Metal Na Lata: Even with the modernity and electronic elements, as we can see in “Inertiae”, the new album has a lot of the Black/Death Metal vibe from the 90s in terms of sound, style and brutality, as in “Förnyelse i Tre Akter”. How important is it for you to stay true to your roots? Does that scene and moment still have an influence on you, whether it’s when it comes to composing or playing?
Timo Kontio: For me the sound of the 90’s or the feeling of that era is always something I look for in my writing. The special feeling you got when you discovered all those new black metal bands and there were many of them. Of course this is not just a nostalgia thing so sure we do this with a modern touch, but not forgetting where we started. So to answer your question, it is really important to stay true to our roots. That is the basic sound of this band. Those bands of the 90’s are still the ones I go back to really often. I enjoy some of the new music too and most likely they are as good as the bands from the past, but those bands from the past take you to a certain place and state of mind that no new music or bands can.
Metal Na Lata: With the release of the new album, what are the band’s plans for the future?
Timo Kontio: We want to take this to the next level. That being more gigs, more festivals, more tours and more places to visit. Better conditions are always a plus. We are really confident in what we are doing, we just need to be in the right place at the right time.
Metal Na Lata: Thank you again for your time and attention. I wish the band much success with the new album. Would you like to leave a message for the fans?
Timo Kontio: Thanks! Hopefully we will see you all on tour or at the festivals in the near future.
