Tenho certeza que os leigos ao ouvirem ou lerem o nome Alter Bridge criam duas alternativas em sua cabeça quase que instantaneamente: “Banda dos caras que eram do Creed com outro vocalista” e “Banda do cara que canta na banda solo do Slash, do Guns N’ Roses”. Não estão errados, mas o Alter Bridge é muito mais que isso em se tratando de sonoridade, qualidade musical e “novidade” dentro do Rock/Metal. “Novidade”, bem entre aspas mesmo, pois já estão na estrada há 15 anos, portanto só é realmente novidade para aqueles que moram dentro de uma bolha pintada de Terra ou para aqueles que gostam de vociferar as duas alternativas que citei mais acima sem ao menos ter escutado seu trabalho.
“Walk The Sky”, sexto álbum de estúdio de Myles Kennedy (vocal/guitarra), Mark Tremonti (guitarra/vocal), Brian Marshall (baixo) e Scott Phillips, segue na linha dos três últimos álbuns de estúdio da banda, ou seja, caminhando sempre na ascendência do sucesso, incluindo passagens mais diferenciadas e exóticas do que o normal. Um pouco menos pesado que seu antecessor, “The Last Hero” (2016), temos composições inteligentes, recheadas de refrões impactantes para se cantar junto, muita melodia e harmonia, técnica apurada e muito, mas muito bom gosto. Pode ser que o ouvinte necessite de duas ou mais audições para compreender o álbum, e isso eu falo por experiência própria, mas após isso se tornará daqueles álbuns que você o chama carinhosamente de “lindeza” (risos).
Estrategicamente, a banda disponibilizou 5 singles antes do lançamento do álbum, e são faixas, mais três que vou citar adiante, que realmente ditam e marcam-no de forma categórica, podendo se tornar clássicos da banda e muito pedidas ao vivo. A saber: “Wouldn’t You Rather”, “In The Deep”, “Take The Crown”, “Pay No Mind” e “Dying Light”.
Ao todo, temos 14 faixas, sendo que “One Life”, que abre o álbum, é apenas uma introdução climática, sem muita variação, com Myles cantando de forma suave. Das 5 faixas citadas acima, 4 delas, “Wouldn’t You Rather”, “In The Deep” (que refrão, que peso!), “Take The Crown” e “Pay No Mind”, junto das exuberantes e pesadíssimas “Native Son”, “Indoctrination” (pode soar estranha nas primeiras audições, mas depois não tem como ficar parado por conta da rifferama metal de Mark) e a belíssima “Forever Falling”, cantada quase que toda por Mark Tremonti, tendo Myles em algumas partes como backing vocals e pontes, são disparadas as melhores de todo o trabalho por conter tudo que um fã da banda aprecia: muito peso, melodia, harmonia, refrão cativante e solos vibrantes. Ou seja, são faixas que você coloca numa coletânea de “The Best Of” facilmente. A semi balada “Dying Light”, por sua vez, me parece uma sobra do “AB III” (2010) e não me chamou muito a atenção.
Falando em “AB III”, numa entrevista de Mark e Myles recentemente, vi que eles comentaram que “Walk The Sky” é um álbum totalmente contrário de “AB III”, por ser positivo e para cima em termos de sonoridade e temática. Concordo plenamente, e para mim esses dois álbuns é como se formássemos o “yin” e o “yang” do Alter Bridge.
O restante do trabalho passa de ano com nota sobrando, como por exemplo “The Bitter End” que soa como algo do álbum “Blackbird” (2007), a soturna e cadenciada “Clear Horizon” mostrando toda a dinâmica e versatilidade de seus compositores, e outras faixas apostando sempre em melodias totalmente radiofônicas, o que é e sempre será uma característica fortíssima da banda, mesclando certo peso, passagens mais bonitas e viajantes com algumas inserções de teclados climáticos aqui e ali sem descaracterizar seu som.
O mais interessante da banda é a facilidade com que eles conseguem intercalar momentos de pura suavidade com outras de brutalidade em questão de segundos, tendo a voz espetacular de Myles como o elo forte da corrente entre esses dois mundos.
Obviamente temos momentos de “calmaria” e “cadência” como, por exemplo, “Godspeed”, a faixa título com seu belíssimo refrão e “Tear Us Apart”, que são apenas bons exemplos de como fazer algo mais suave sem soar piegas, mas isso não significa que as tornem destaques ou memoráveis. São apenas “ok”, e não te farão clicar no repeat após a audição. Tenho certeza, principalmente “Godspeed” que está no meio da primeira metade do álbum misturada a todas as pauladas descritas acima. Dá até dó dela lá (risos).
Resumindo, “Wouldn’t You Rather”, “In the Deep”, “Native Son”, “Take the Crown”, “Indoctrination”, “Pay No Mind” e “Forever Falling”, valem o disco todo e mesmo que o restante fosse meia boca, o que passa muito longe disso pois esses caras humilham de uma forma tão grande em termos de qualidade, a nota 9 seria bem dada!
Ninguém segura esses monstros, o topo é pouco para tanta versatilidade! Sem soar clubista, se tem uma banda que pode se tornar gigante nessa nova geração do Rock/Metal, eis aqui ela!
Outra coisa, não fique achando que o Alter Bridge é só Myles e Mark, o trabalho de Scott e Brian juntos se transformam na catapulta para que o conjunto continue sempre subindo!
Deixa de ser “Maria vai com as outras”, escute, se apaixone e vicie! Se mesmo assim a “tr00zisse” for maior e você não gostar, procure um psiquiatra urgente pois é grave ou aceite que doerá bem menos!

I’m sure that when people who don’t know a lot about music read or hear the name Alter Bridge they create two alternatives in their mind almost instantly: “the guys from Creed with another vocalist” and “the guy who sings in Slash’s (from Guns n’ Roses) solo band”. They aren’t wrong, but Alter Bridge is so much more than that when it comes to sonority, musical quality and “newness” in the Rock/Metal genres. “Newness” in quotes, because they’ve been in the road for 15 years, so it is only really news to those who live inside a bubble disguised as Earth, or to those who like to chant the two alternatives I’ve mentioned earlier without even listening to their work.
“Walk The Sky”, Alter Bridge’s sixth album (Myles Kennedy guitar/vocals, Mark Tremonti guitar/vocals, Brian Marshall bass, Scott Phillips drums), follows the three previous albums’ path, always ascending to success, including different and exotic sounds. A little less heavy than “The Last Hero” (2016), we have clever compositions, filled with impressive choruses to sing along, lots of melody and harmony, refined technique and taste. It’s possible that the listener will need two or more tries to comprehend the album, and this I say from my own experience, but after that it’ll become one of those albums you affectionately call “a beauty” (lol).
Strategically, the band made available 5 singles before the album’s release, and they are tracks, three more that I will mention later, that really dictate and mark it categorically, and can become classics of the band and much requested live. Namely: “Wouldn’t You Rather”, “In The Deep”, “Take The Crown”, “Pay No Mind” and “Dying Light”.
We have 14 tracks in total, and “One Life”, which opens the album and is just a climate introduction, without much variation in Myles’ softly singing. Of the 5 tracks mentioned above, 4 of them, “Wouldn’t You Rather”, “In The Deep” (what a chorus, what a weight!), “Take The Crown” and “Pay No Mind”, along with the lush and overpowering “Native” Son”,“Indoctrination” (may sound strange at first, but then there’s no way to stay still because of Mark’s metal riff) and the beautiful “Forever Falling”, sung almost entirely by Mark Tremonti, with Myles in some parts as backing vocals and bridges, the best of all work is fired because it contains everything a fan of the band likes: lots of weight, melody, harmony, catchy chorus and vibrant solos. They are tracks that you put on a collection of “The Best Of” easily. The semi ballad “Dying Light”, in turn, seems to me a leftover from the “AB III” (2010) and did not catch my attention very much.
Speaking of “AB III”, in an interview Mark and Myles recently said that “Walk The Sky” is a total opposite album of “AB III”, for being positive and upwards in terms of sound and theme. I totally agree, and to me these two albums are like forming the “yin” and “yang” of Alter Bridge.
The rest of the album exceeds expectation with songs such as “The Bitter End” which sounds like something from the album “Blackbird” (2007), the dark and rhythmic “Clear Horizon” showing all the dynamics and versatility of its composers, and other tracks always betting on totally radio melodies, which is and always will be a very strong feature of the band, mixing a certain weight, more beautiful passages with some insertions of climatic keyboards here and there without mischaracterizing their sound.
The most interesting thing about the band is the ease with which they can intersect moments of pure softness with others of brutality in a matter of seconds, with Myles’ spectacular voice as the strong link between these two worlds.
Obviously we have moments of “calm” and “cadence” such as “Godspeed”, the title track with its beautiful chorus and “Tear Us Apart”, which are just good examples of how to do something softer without sounding corny, but This does not mean that they make them stand out or memorable. They are just “ok”, and they won’t make you click repeat after listening for the first time. I’m sure, especially “Godspeed” which is in the middle of the first half of the album mixed with all the incredible ones described above. It makes you even pity her a bit (laughs).
In short, “Wouldn’t You Rather”, “In the Deep”, “Native Son”, “Take the Crown”, “Indoctrination”, “Pay No Mind” and “Forever Falling” are worth the whole album and even if the the rest were half-assed, which isn’t true in the slightest because these guys rock in such a great way, in terms of quality the grade 9 is well given!
Nobody holds these monsters, the top is too little for such versatility! Without sounding too partial, if there’s any band that can become a giant in this new generation of Rock/Metal, here it is!
Another thing, do not think that Alter Bridge is just Myles and Mark, the work of Scott and Brian together becomes the fuel that keeps them going upwards!
Don’t form an opinion without information, listen, fall in love and get addicted! If then your urge to troll is still bigger and you don’t like it, look for an psychiatrist right now because it is serious, or accept the truth.
