Falar sobre Tygers of Pan Tang é tratar de uma história que remonta aos primórdios do Hard Rock e Heavy Metal, no momento da modulação da NWOBHM, no final dos anos 70, e que continua se desenvolvendo e se reinventando até hoje. Entre hiatos, altos e baixos numa carreira que se aproxima dos 40 anos, a banda nos legou diversos álbuns definitivos para a consolidação do Metal que conhecemos hoje em dia, tais como “Wild Cat” (1980), “Spellbound” (1981), “Crazy Nights” (1981). Seu mais recente lançamento, auto-intitulado, “Tygers of Pan Tang” (2016) mostra a banda flertando com nuances de hard rock melódico e AOR, sem perder o estilo que os tornou uma instituição do gênero.
A banda, pela qual já passaram monstros sagrados do Metal, como John Sykes, Jess Cox, Glen Howes, atualmente é formada por Jacopo Meille (vocal), Gavin Gray (baixo), Craig Ellis (bateria), Micky Crystal (guitarra) e Robb Weir, guitarrista e membro original do Tygers, com quem fizemos a entrevista abaixo, na qual ele fala sobre passado, presente e futuro. Metal na Lata: Olá Robb. Prazer falar com você. O novo álbum é incrível!
Robb Weirr: Prazer é meu. Muito obrigado, todos nós achamos isso também!
Metal na Lata: Como se sentem reinventando seu próprio estilo musical depois de tantos anos?
Robb Weirr: Não estou certo de que reinventamos nosso som, eu acho que nosso estilo musical sempre esteve presente em nossas composições. Certamente as músicas neste álbum estão entre as mais fortes que já compusemos.
Metal na Lata: Não seria mais fácil apenas manter a velha fórmula de sucesso?
Robb Weirr: Nós mantivemos, escrevemos músicas no estilo Tygers e somos muito orgulhosos de nossas músicas e a direção em que elas vão.
Metal na Lata: Apesar do catálogo antigo ainda detonar, parece que a banda busca uma nova direção – um pouco mais melódico e apostando numa vertente mais Hard Rock. É isto mesmo?
Robb Weirr: Eu acho que nossa direção musical sempre foi Tygers! Sempre que escrevemos uma música a primeira pergunta que nos fazemos é: “Isto é Tygers?” Se a resposta for positiva, então desenvolvemos a música um pouco mais. É um processo muito excitante!
Metal na Lata: Como a atual formação colaborou neste direcionamento musical?
Robb Weirr: Nossa formação atual está junta há quase quatro anos. Todos nós escrevemos as músicas e nunca há escassez de riffs potentes de guitarra para escolher e desenvolver! Os rapazes são todos músicos muito talentosos e criar músicas novas é sempre um prazer!
Metal na Lata: Como foi a reação da mídia e dos fãs sobre o novo álbum?
Robb Weirr: Bem, como todos podem ver o novo álbum foi muito bem recebido. Ele estreou nas paradas do Reino Unido na posição 24 e na Dinamarca no 13. Estreou até mesmo nas paradas de AOR em primeiro lugar! E as resenhas continuam afirmando que é o melhor álbum de 2016! Eu acredito que os fãs gostam também haja vista que eles estão comprando milhares de cópias.
Metal na Lata: Você sabia que a banda foi bem famosa no Brasil nos anos 80, especialmente em virtude do ‘Tyger Logo’ (muitas pessoas tinham camisetas com a capa do álbum e também colecionavam a figurinha com a logo-marca da banda)? Você se arrepende ou pensa que a banda perdeu o ‘timing’ para se tornar enorme nos anos 80?
Robb Weirr: Você não pode viver de arrependimentos ou pensando no que poderia ser! Todas as decisões que as pessoas fazem são decisões acertas para aquele momento (ou pelo menos é o que esperam!). Vamos nos focar no presente e dar aos fãs brasileiros este fantástico novo álbum do Tygers e, quem sabe, alguns shows aí em breve.
Metal na Lata: De volta ao presente, então, quais são os planos para a turnê? Alguma chance de virem ao Brasil?
Robb Weirr: Nós já estivemos em Portugal em janeiro. Os próximos shows serão na Alemanha e Itália em março, Polônia em abril e Alemanha, Holanda, Bélgica e Dinamarca em maio. Depois disso temos Itália e Espanha e uma turnê no Reino Unido em novembro. Portanto, estamos bem ocupados. Brasil? Sim, certamente voltaremos, não tenham dúvidas.

Robb Weirr: My pleasure. Thank you very much, we all think that too!
Metal na Lata: How does it feel to reinvent your own music style after all those years gone by?
Robb Weirr: I’m not so sure we have re-invented it, I think our style of music has always been there in our song writing. Certainly the songs on this album are among our strongest to date.
Metal na Lata: Wouldn’t it be easier to just keep the same old formula?
Robb Weirr: We have, we write Tygers style songs and are very proud of our song writing and the direction the songs go in.
Metal na Lata: Even though the old catalogue still kicks ass, it seems like the band is going in a new direction – a little more melodic and betting on a Hard Rock vibe, is that right?
Robb Weirr: I think our musical direction has always been Tygers! Whenever we write a song the first question we ask ourselves is, “Is it Tygers?” If the answer is yes, then we develop the song a bit more. It’s a very exciting process!
Metal na Lata: How’s the new line-up helped on that new musical direction?
Robb Weirr: Our ‘new’ line up has been together nearly four years! We all write songs and there is never a shortage of huge guitar riffs to choose from and develop! The boys are all very talented musicians and creating new music is always a pleasure!
Metal na Lata: What about the press and fans reaction on the new album?
Robb Weirr: Well as everyone can se the new album has been raved about by everyone. In entered the charts in the UK at 24 and Denmark at 13. It even entered the AOR charts at number 1! And reviewers keep telling us it’s there number one album release of 2016! I guess the fans like it too as they are buying it by the thousands.
Metal na Lata: Did you know that the band was well known in Brazil in the 80’s, specially due to the ‘Tyger Logo’ (a lot of people used to have t-shirts with the “Wild Cat” cover on it in the 80’s and also it was a sticker that people loved in the sticker albums times). Do you regret or think that the band lost the timing to grow huge in the 80’s?
Robb Weirr: You can’t live on regrets or what might have been! All decision’s people make are the right decisions at the time (or so you hope!) Let’s focus on the now and give our Brazilian fans this fantastic new Tygers album and hopefully some shows in the near future.
Metal na Lata: Back to the here and now, which are the tour plans? Any chance to make it in Brazil?
Robb Weirr: We have already been to Portugal in January. Next shows are in Germany and Italy in March, Poland in April and Germany, Holland Belgium and Denmark in May. After that we have Italy and Spain the Far East and a UK tour in November. So really busy. Brazil? yes we will be back for sure, that’s a promise.
