Entrevista com Jussi Matilainen (Where’s My Bible)

Tendo ganhado destaque no cenário mundial do metal nos últimos anos, os finlandeses do Where’s My Bible chamaram atenção, especialmente no Brasil, após vencerem o concurso cultural Come To Latin America. A iniciativa, destinada a bandas emergentes de metal finlandês, tinha como objetivo promover a música, difundir a cultura do país e colaborar para desmistificar alguns preconceitos ainda existentes em torno do Heavy Metal.
Eleito pelo público latino-americano, o Where’s My Bible é formado por Pasi Löfgrén e Toni Hinkkala (guitarras), Jussi Matilainen (vocais, instrumentos folk), Teppo Ristola (bateria) e Juho Jokimies (baixo). Originários da pequena cidade de Heinola, eles apresentam uma mescla musical que combina Deathcore, Black Metal, Death Metal e Folk, sendo a banda mais extrema entre as três finalistas do concurso. Como prêmio, receberam um contrato de distribuição com a Nuclear Blast, por meio da subsidiária Blood Blast Digital Distribution — uma das maiores gravadoras especializadas no gênero.
Com isso, a banda lançou “Kave”, seu segundo álbum de estúdio, que tem recebido críticas positivas ao redor do mundo. Tivemos a oportunidade de conversar com Jussi Matilainen sobre o disco, o processo de gravação, as influências e como foi tocar na América Latina. Metal Na Lata: Gostaria de começar agradecendo pelo tempo e atenção para esta entrevista.
Jussi Matilainen: Obrigado! É um prazer fazer esta entrevista com você.
Metal Na Lata: A banda está na ativa há um tempo, com o primeiro EP, The Beginning, lançado em 2016. Como tem sido esse período até agora?
Jussi Matilainen: Tem sido muito interessante, quase como uma montanha-russa. A cada ano damos um passo adiante em direção ao nosso sonho, então podemos considerar que tem sido um grande sucesso, eu acho.
Metal Na Lata: Em setembro deste ano, vocês lançaram o segundo álbum de estúdio, Kave. Como têm percebido a recepção do público?
Jussi Matilainen: O feedback tem sido realmente incrível. Não poderíamos pedir mais. A atenção da mídia tem sido muito favorável, e as resenhas do álbum têm sido excelentes.
Metal Na Lata: Vocês ficaram satisfeitos com o resultado apresentado no disco?
Jussi Matilainen: Sim, estamos muito felizes com o resultado. É claro que sempre há algo que poderia ser melhorado ou feito de forma diferente, mas, quando se trata de arte ou música, é preciso decidir o momento em que você deve deixá-la ir.
Metal Na Lata: O álbum apresenta influências de diversos gêneros, como Black Metal, Death Metal e Folk. Como vocês chegaram a essa fórmula e decidiram a melhor forma de apresentá-la ao público?
Jussi Matilainen: As músicas praticamente se construíram sozinhas. Esses gêneros estão muito próximos de nós, então foi natural criar músicas a partir deles. Quando as composições começaram a surgir, simplesmente ouvimos a direção que elas queriam tomar.
Metal Na Lata: Como foi o processo de composição desse novo álbum?
Jussi Matilainen: De forma geral, seguimos nosso método habitual: alguns membros criaram a estrutura inicial, e depois todos combinamos nossas ideias e pensamentos para chegar ao resultado final. Cada música sempre traz algo único. Desta vez, no entanto, tivemos uma agenda muito ocupada e precisamos fazer muitas coisas de maneira diferente. Por exemplo, gravamos nossos instrumentos individualmente em casa e enviamos as gravações para Pasi fazer a mixagem logo em seguida.
Metal Na Lata: Atualmente, muitas bandas têm abordado temas como saúde mental em suas letras, e várias pessoas dizem que foram salvas por músicas desse tipo. Como vocês veem essa situação e por que decidiram adotar esse tema?
Jussi Matilainen: Achamos extremamente importante abordar esses temas. Eles estão muito próximos de nós e são assuntos que precisam ser discutidos. Se uma música ou letra nossa ajuda alguém — mesmo que seja apenas uma pessoa —, já sentimos que conquistamos mais do que poderíamos imaginar. A música já tem o poder de ajudar as pessoas de diversas formas. Se pudermos aprofundar essa possibilidade, estaremos alcançando algo realmente grande e importante.
Metal Na Lata: Vocês venceram o concurso Come To Latin America, conseguindo um contrato com a Blood Blast Digital Distribution. Como foi essa experiência?
Jussi Matilainen: Foi maravilhoso saber que o público latino-americano nos escolheu como favoritos! Além disso, a parceria com a Blood Blast nos trouxe mais experiência nos aspectos técnicos e administrativos do lançamento de um álbum.
Metal Na Lata: Vocês fizeram uma turnê no Brasil com quatro shows. Como foi a experiência? Isso influenciou de alguma forma na composição de Kave?
Jussi Matilainen: Foi fantástico em todos os sentidos! E, agora que você perguntou, posso dizer honestamente que, sim, essa experiência definitivamente influenciou a criação do álbum até certo ponto.
Metal Na Lata: Há uma grande distância entre a Finlândia e a América Latina, e seu país de origem é conhecido por uma vasta quantidade de bandas. Como foi vencer um concurso com votos de um público tão distante?
Jussi Matilainen: Isso nos deu ainda mais confiança em nossa música e mostrou que podemos avançar em nossas carreiras. É muito difícil se destacar como banda de metal na Finlândia, dado o grande número de bandas de alta qualidade aqui.
Metal Na Lata: Essa vitória mostra como a comunidade do metal é grande e tem força para promover conquistas como essa. Como vocês veem o cenário atual do metal?
Jussi Matilainen: Concordo totalmente. Os metalheads formam uma comunidade única, com uma cultura própria que é incrível. Você pode visitar países completamente diferentes, mas as pessoas do metal sempre têm algo em comum, onde quer que estejam.
Metal Na Lata: Quais são os próximos planos da banda?
Jussi Matilainen: No momento, estamos focados em nossos próximos shows e turnês, além de já começarmos a trabalhar em novas músicas para o próximo álbum.
Metal Na Lata: Agradeço novamente pela atenção e desejo muito sucesso a vocês. Gostariam de deixar alguma mensagem para os fãs brasileiros?
Jussi Matilainen: Muito obrigado pela entrevista! Sim, temos algo a dizer aos fãs brasileiros: cuidem-se, espalhem amor, aproveitem a vida, e esperamos ver todos vocês em breve. Até lá, “keep the horns up and stay metal”!

Having gained prominence on the world metal scene in recent years, the Finns from Where’s My Bible made a splash, especially in Brazil, after winning the Come To Latin America cultural contest aimed at emerging Finnish metal bands, with the aim of spreading music, promote the country’s culture and collaborate with the three prejudices that still exist around Heavy Metal.
Voted by the Latin American public, the band formed by Pasi Löfgrén and Toni Hinkkala (guitars), Jussi Matilainen (vocals, folk instruments), Teppo Ristola (drums) and Juho Jokimies (bass) is from a small town called Heinola and makes a mix musical between Deathcore, Black Metal, Death Metal and Folk, being musically more extreme of the three finalist bands.
As the winner of the competition, Where’s My Bible received a distribution agreement with Nuclear Blast through the participation of Blood Blast Digital Distribution – one of the largest niche record labels in the world and which acted as a partner in the initiative.
With this, the band released “Kave”, their second studio album which has received rave reviews around the world. I had the opportunity to talk to the band about the album, the recording process, the influences and what it was like playing in Latin America. Check out the full interview below.
Metal Na Lata: I would like to start by thanking you for your time and attention to this interview.
Jussi Matilainen: Thank you it is a pleasure to have an interview with you.
Metal Na Lata: The band has been active for a while now, with their first EP, “The Beginning”, having been released in 2016. How has this period of activity been so far?
Jussi Matilainen: It has been really interesting and like a roller coaster, every year we have been taking one step further to our dream so it has been pretty successful I guess.
Metal Na Lata: In September of this year you released your second studio album, “Kave”. How have you seen his reception by the public?
Jussi Matilainen: Feedback has been really super amazing. We couldn’t have asked for more. The media attention has been very favorable and the album reviews have all looked very good.
Metal Na Lata: And were you happy with the result presented on the album?
Jussi Matilainen: Yes we are really happy with the results. Of course you can always find something to make it better or differently, but what comes to an art or music you have to decide the point when you are ready to let it go.
Metal Na Lata: The album features influences from different genres, such as Black Metal, Death Metal and Folk. How did you arrive at this formula and how did you decide the best way to show it to the public?
Where’s My Bible: The songs started building almost by themselves, the genres in question are all very close to us, so it was easy to draw music from them, and when the song begins to be born, you have to listen to the direction it wants to develop.
Metal Na Lata: How did the composition process for this new album work?
Jussi Matilainen: Almost in the same usual way as in general a couple of men build the frame and then we combine the common ideas and thoughts to a final result that pleases us. Every song always carries something of itself and its own. The only thing is that on this album we had a very busy schedule, we had to do many things differently than usual, for example we had to record each of our own instruments from our home and send them to Pasi for mixing immediately after they were recorded.
Metal Na Lata: Nowadays many bands have adopted themes such as mental health in their lyrics and many people say they were saved after listening to some songs. How do you see this situation and why did you decide to adopt this theme in your compositions?
Jussi Matilainen: It felt important to write this kind of theme. We wanted to write about such topics because it seemed to be close to us and because these are the things that should be said. The fact that if someone gets help from a song or saying we wrote, even one person, then we have received much more than we have ever dreamed and then on the right path, because music already helps people in many ways. So if we can deepen this possibility, then we are on the verge of something big and important.
Metal Na Lata: You were the winners of the Come To Latin America contest, thus getting a contract with Blood Blast Digital Distribution. What was the experience of being selected like?
Jussi Matilainen: It felt wonderful when we heard that the Latin American audience had voted us their favorite! And through Blood Blast we have gained more experience in the not-so-interesting aspects related to the release of the album.
Metal Na Lata: You also did a tour in Brazil with four shows. How was the experience of playing in the country? Did this contribute in any way when composing “Kave”?
Jussi Matilainen: It was fantastic in every aspect, and oh yes, now that you asked, yes, I can honestly say that it definitely influenced the creation of the album to some extent.
Metal Na Lata: There is a huge distance between Finland and Latin America, and the country you came from is known for its vast number of bands. For you, what was it like to win a competition chosen by an audience from such a distant place?
Jussi Matilainen: It gave me a lot more faith in our music. And that now we will certainly be able to move forward in our careers. It’s very difficult to get noticed as a metal band from Finland when there are such a huge number of metal bands here. It is not made easier by the fact that most Finnish metal bands are also very good and high-quality metal.
Metal Na Lata: This victory shows how big the metal community is and has the strength to help with great achievements like this. How do you see this music scene currently?
Jussi Matilainen: I agree with you. Metalheads are their own group of people, they have their own culture, which is extremely awesome. You may visit a completely different new country whose culture is quite different compared to your own, but you will notice that metal people are very similar all over the world.
Metal Na Lata: What are the band’s plans at the moment?
Jussi Matilainen: At the moment we are focusing on our upcoming live shows and trying to have tours and more shows. And actually we’ve started to build new songs for the next album.
